Can Employees Use the Nurse Navigator Before the Plan Effective Date?

Yes. In general, employees can reach out to their Nurse Navigator anytime after open enrollment meetings begin, even if the plan hasn’t started yet.

Before the effective date, nurses can:

  • Answer questions about how the plan works.
  • Help members prepare for upcoming care needs.
  • Identify preferred providers for services that may occur after the plan goes live.

However, nurses cannot actively direct care or coordinate services until the plan’s effective date. For most members, the month prior to the effective date is the most valuable time to connect with their nurse — this ensures any surgeries, procedures, or prescription needs are lined up in advance for a smooth transition.
