How Are Direct Primary Care (DPC) Practices Selected?
Whenever Self Fund Health receives an RFP from an employer, we evaluate which Direct Primary Care (DPC) practices can best serve the member population. Our approach balances two goals:
- Ensure all members are covered by a DPC
- Minimize the number of different DPCs needed for simplicity and efficiency
Self Fund Health is agnostic about which specific DPCs are chosen—as long as the practice is committed to providing high-quality primary care and partnering with us on downstream steerage (guiding members to cost-effective specialists, imaging, and procedures).
Our Selection Process
- Start with the census – We map member locations against DPC offices.
- First assignment – Members within a 30-minute drive of a DPC are assigned to the practice that covers the largest number of members.
- Repeat the process – With remaining members, we repeat the analysis until every member is assigned to a DPC.
- Provide alternatives – If desired, we can generate alternative proposals with different DPC combinations for the employer to review.
Key takeaway: We select DPCs systematically to maximize coverage and minimize complexity, while staying flexible to employer preferences.
